The main branch of a repository with a specially crafted name allows an attacker to create repositories with malicious code, victims who clone or download these repositories will execute arbitrary code on their systems.
Summary dbcve.org
GitLab fails to properly sanitize repository names, allowing attackers to create repositories with specially crafted main branch names that cause arbitrary code execution when victims clone or download the repository. This is a supply-chain attack vector where the malicious behavior triggers upon repository interaction.
Mitigation
Upgrade GitLab to versions 15.9.6, 15.10.5, 15.11.1 or later. Until patched, exercise extreme caution when cloning repositories with unusual or non-standard names from untrusted sources.
